Priority One: Improving Levees and Public Safety

West Sacramento has a strong track record of successfully improving levees to meet or exceed existing federal safety regulations. The West Sacramento Flood Control Agency (WSFCA) is currently partnering with the State Department of Water Resources (DWR) to evaluate its levees against revised federal guidelines issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Preliminary evaluations of the levees surrounding West Sacramento indicate issues similar to those being identified in many Northern California communities. Results from these evaluations are being used to help prioritize and estimate the cost of necessary levee improvements.

In July 2007, West Sacramento property owners approved an annual parcel assessment to be dedicated toward levee improvement projects. Proceeds from the assessment provide the local funding commitment necessary to secure state and federal funding, which is expected to pay for the majority of levee improvement costs.
