Paying for Levee Repairs

New Annual Parcel Assessment and Development fees to Raise Necessary Local Funds

Although it is anticipated that the majority of the necessary improvements to West Sacramento levees will be funded through state and federal assistance, local communities are required to pay for a portion of the overall costs.

In July 2007, West Sacramento property owners approved an annual parcel assessment to be dedicated toward levee improvement projects. Proceeds from the assessment provide the local funding commitment necessary to secure state and federal funding, which is expected to pay for the majority of levee improvement costs.  The city is aggressively pursuing state and federal funding. Read more on the City’s state priorities (PDF-188 KB) and federal priorities (PDF-1.4 MB).

As of July, 2007, new development is required to contribute to the City’s goal of achieving 200-year flood protection. New development has an option to demonstrate that new structures have 200-year flood protection as well as an option to pay a fee in lieu of making physical improvements. The adopted in-lieu fees and “Final In-Lieu Fee Study” (PDF-988 KB) are available for review.
